VLT Responsible Gambling Awards Program

Now in its seventh year, the Responsible Gambling Awards program is an important part of the AGLC’s commitment to ensuring that Alberta’s gaming industry operates in a socially responsible manner. Every year, hundreds of VLT retailers and their staff benefit from receiving Reel Facts (formerly Winning Moments) responsible gambling awareness training, a mandatory requirement of the program.

The AGLC encourages all VLT retailers to actively participate in this program, developed to instruct employees in licensed establishments with VLTs about responsible gambling; what it is and how to promote healthy attitudes towards gambling.

How are award recipients acknowledged?

For their participation in the program, VLT retailer award recipients are recognized with:

  1. An advertisement in a local newspaper, recognizing the retailer’s business in their community; and
  2. A wall plaque for display in the retailer’s venue that identifies the retailer and his or her staff as having received a Responsible Gambling Award. Awards will be delivered in fall, 2009.

What are the requirements of the Responsible Gambling Awards program?

VLT retailers must certify that all staff involved with VLTs have received Reel Facts certification. Staff must have their Reel Facts certificates on-site.
Note: All VLT staff are required to certify via the Reel Facts online training program by January 1, 2010
.

VLT retailers must certify that all of the following AGLC signs (posters) are posted, current and in good condition:

  1. The Odds Are, Someone Depends On You
  2. VLT Rules of Play/Gaming Irregularities
  3. Robbery Procedures:
Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service, or RCMP.

How do I apply?

To be eligible for an award, VLT retailers must meet the two mandatory requirements of the responsible gambling program and complete and submit the Annual Award Application.

Submit the completed application form to the AGLC on or before August 15, 2009 to be eligible for an award. The form may be completed online and submitted electronically (re the ‘Submit’ button on the form) or:

Reminder:

  • AGLC Inspectors include the mandatory requirements of the responsible gambling program on their regular maintenance inspection checklists.
  • VLT Retailers are required to comply with Section 12.16.1 of the Licensee Handbook. VLT retailers who are not in compliance will receive notice from the Inspector, who will identify the outstanding or additional requirements to be completed in order to achieve compliance. Subsequent violations may result in warning letters or termination of the VLT Retailer Agreement and removal of the VLTs.
